It surprises me, the speed at which my kids work to fill empty pages.
Whether it's with paint, crayons or pencils, the result is the same: they pour out onto the paper all the ideas and stories they've been holding back.
Yesterday we made journals. Just folded scrapbook paper in half (we cut some into smaller pieces first), folded copy paper we had trimmed to fit, and sewed down the center to hold it all together.
It took all of 3 seconds before the kids each grabbed one of the blank books to mark as their own.
Lily is working on a fairy tale, and most likely will cut and paste her illustrations and the text I'm typing from her dictation into the journal she chose.
Halle and Wesley, though, are collaborating on their individual works! Halle is starting another fan fiction story, this time sprouting from her Lord of the Rings obsession. It's centered on halflings, dwarves, elves and "Center World," the land she is creating for her adventure, The Lord of the Necklaces.Wesley, not one to let an opportunity to explain something pass him by, quickly started on his own work: The Guide to Center World: A companion to Lord of the Necklaces.
Halle is still working on setting up her story: creating characters and doing much research by reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy and playing Lego LOTR on the wii.
Really, I'm not worried if Halle never moves beyond this point. Anyone who has tried their hand at fiction knows that what isn't in it can shape the story as much as the events and dialogue the author includes. A young writer with a bent for fiction could do worse than practice creating a backstory, right?
Wesley, on the other hand, just has to ask his sister about the background details. He's free to focus on creating his story. Wes already has written and illustrated a few page-long chapters. He says he's not ready for publication at this point, but he's describing all kinds of places in "Center World" and has been having fun doing it. He even created a map! Wes is working on backstory after all!
I'm excited to see what Halle comes up with, and how Wesley takes Halle's characters and setting, and creates something entirely new with his guide! As for Lily's fairy tale ... she has been working hard, and it's coming soon!

Josh says that he likes Lord of the Rings too and has the DS game. He thinks that Halle's story sounds amazing and Wesley's Guide sounds awesome! Joe says..."Wesley, I think you are going to do great. I really like your stories!" Both boys are excited to read the coming story and guide!!!
