on prompts ~ Harris Burdick

We came home to a welcome surprise today after a quick, mid-day visit with Nate: a box marked "Amazon." Inside were all manner of treats for a homeschool family, including a butterfly house (Lily was ecstatic!) and one of my treasures, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg.

Mysteries is a book of illustrations with only a title and headline attached to each picture. Countless students (and even authors - Van Allsburg published a book of these stories written by well-known children's authors) have written stories to go along with the images. I remember writing from a few of these prompts - maybe you do, too?

The pictures became dinner conversation, and soon half-eaten bowls of spaghetti - normally a favorite - got pushed aside as the girls began forming stories in their minds. Here is Lily's:

Captain Tory and the Mysterious Boat

He swung the lantern three times and slowly the schooner appeared. And then he saw that strange people were rowing the boat fastly. And then when they stopped the boat, the pirates came out of the ships.

And then more and more ships arrived fastly. More and more bad and evil was coming, which no one liked much. And more and more bad was going on because they were all bad guys. And the guy wishes he wouldn't have swung his lantern to get those boats here. And since his daughter got some butterflies, he decided to leave them there.

It wasn’t a happy day for him, but he decided to leave them anyway. And everybody was forced to seek shelter. Everybody was running and running, and everything was not fun there. It was kind of a fun place, but now it was kind of the worst ever. And then, one time, since it was the middle of summer, he decided to let the butterflies go and fly away. It was kind of a magical place because butterflies could read books there. And they knew a secret passage way, and they always read the books.

The butterflies were reading and studying. And then all the butterflies knew the way to get rid of those bad guys forever. They flew and flew until they made a little drink that made them go away and never come back forever. So the bad guys drank the drink and they never came back because they forgot their way.

And then they lived happily ever after! The End.

Be kind! As these are primarily kids' creative works - and many are works-in-progress - please keep comments POSITIVE! :) Consider what you liked, what you learned and what inspires you. Thanks!
